Company Culture - What Is It and Why Is it Important?

As Career Consultants, we ask our clients about workplace culture. I often wonder, what is company culture exactly and why is it driving so many to seek new opportunities?

Employees explain that it impacts their well being. It is at times, elusive and other times, invasive. And it is hard to describe its existence and impact.

This I know for sure - when it changes, improves or deteriorates, we feel it and it impacts us.

After much reflection and study, I have come to believe that workplace culture shapes who we are inspired to be.

It is an organization's personality - its shared values, beliefs, and attitudes. It encompasses the way people interact with each other, the company's mission and vision, the level of collaboration and support, and the overall atmosphere within the workplace.

Workplace culture plays a crucial role in shaping employee experiences and influences their #engagement, #job satisfaction, and overall #performance. It is reflected in the company's policies, communication styles, leadership approach, and the overall norms and expectations that guide how work is conducted.

It is established by the leadership team.  Change the leader, change the culture.  Leaders hire and reward those that fit into the culture that they are seeking to create or reinforce what has been established. It’s real, noteworthy, and impactful.

How does an applicant pick up on the company culture in the midst of a job search?

As an applicant, consider the culture along with the opportunity and salary.  When interviewing, notice how the team communicates.  Are they credible? Can they provide examples of how each was supported, trusted, and encouraged? Are they proud to be a part of this team? Notice how it feels during the office tour. Would you enjoy working there? Would you fit in? Do you believe in their mission? Trust your instincts.

Give yourself a gift that keeps on giving - select a workplace culture that inspires.
