Why Should I Hire a Career Coach?
As a career coach, I learn something new from my clients every day. This week alone, I’ve delved into renewable farming practices, heard inspiring consulting success stories, and explored creative new interview questions. But what interests me most is their feedback on the value of career coaching. “Is career coaching worth it?” I often ask. Over 150 clients have said yes—especially in three key areas.
First, clients appreciate their renewed ability to discover and articulate their authentic strengths to differentiate their application. Second, they praise the strategic job search insight that enabled them to earn interviews and offers, and lastly, they appreciate being able to translate past work experiences to new fields and opportunities.
What am I good at? What is the best job for me? Career Coaches help clients articulate their strengths and path forward.
Applicants who can articulate what they bring to the team differentiate themselves from other applicants. Clarity around skills and interests is the gift that keeps on giving. These insights should shape ones’ resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and interview responses.
It is interesting to note that 99% of clients are unable to list more than ONE of their top 5 strengths. We are often a mystery to ourselves. Meet with an expert who can provide trusted and insightful perspectives. A licensed career coach, due to a comprehensive training program, has access to a range of valid and reliable self-assessment tools and is able to select the assessment that will best support clients in their self-discovery.
2. Ever felt overwhelmed by conflicting job search advice online? A career coach can help cut through the noise and offer job market insight.
A career coach provides timely and accurate insight allowing clients to ignore the muddled, conflicting, and inaccurate advice from the internet and/or friends.
Your colleague who offered to rewrite your resume, although appreciated, is most likely unaware of the strategy that is required today, updated from even a few months ago, to make it to the top of the Applicant Tracking System (ATS).
An effective full-time career coach is often immersed within 15-20 job searches per week and is learning daily about the ever-changing application process, especially as it relates to what is working and what is not. She shares this insight in a timely way offering her clients the opportunity to earn that prized interview months sooner than those that do not work with a career coach.
3. How do I change roles and industries? A career coach assists in translating skills to new careers.
Most clients believe they must remain in their current role or industry due to the mistaken belief that their skills will not transfer to new opportunities. One client of mine was convinced she couldn’t transition from finance to tech, but after we unpacked her skills, she landed a role in a fast-growing startup within months.
Let’s face it, the job search can be a tough and lonely process. But the good news? You don’t have to do it alone and apparently, career coaching is worth it :)
